Sound Portraits

23rd and 25th October
5:00pm - 7:30pm

If a photograph could sing, what would it sound like? In this creative workshop, participants will respond to the historic family portrait of James Braithwaite, his wife Emma and their daughter by imagining their hidden voices and feelings at the time. Together we will explore themes of family, migration, and pride echoing the 2025 Black History Month theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.”

Both sessions were successful and we created two community songs reflecting the life and telling our imagined stories of the Braithwaite family. Read some of the reviews of the session below

'"Amazing. The host Kemi ensured that we all participated in the activities by encouraging us to express ourselves, no one’s ideas were dismissed. Kemi brought out our creative side to finally composing a song regarding James Braithwaites life."
